There must be a deck in which this card will be a star. Against these matchups, VE functions as Lands’ version of Dreadhorde Arcanist – a must-answer threat that can run away with the game in a few turns if it isn’t answered. Howling Giant costs a daunting seven mana but provides three bodies, two triggers for Tolsimir, and adds up to 9/9 in total stats. Ranger’s Guile, Heal the Scars, and Strength of the Tajuru also seem very strong with this commander, either providing protection or doing their best impression of a board wipe. Storm Combo is an example of a deck that uses the graveyard peripherally. The Command Zone 300,475 views. In days long gone by, I would have suggested this card to the poor souls that built Ulrich of the Krallenhorde as their Wolf and Werewolf tribal general. Its activated ability gives it some flexibility, but the cost of activation is extremely steep. It won’t even be near the same power level in most circumstances. Now that we have a suitable, on-flavor commander for Hydras, Voracious Hydra seems like a snap inclusion for any Gargos deck. Finally, Ferocious Pup is just adorable and can allow you to employ some emotional blackmail in your political tactics. However, in a deck where approximately 35% of the cards are lands, the possibility of revealing no lands in the top five cards will hover around 10% of activations. Elvish Reclaimer gets +2/+2 as long as there are three or more land cards in your graveyard., , Sacrifice a land: Search your library for a land card, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle your library. First, its base cost is five rather than seven. Here I’m going to do a bit of a deep dive on this card, looking at some common play patterns with the card, what other cards go well with it, and what matchups it excels in. Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you on down the road. Cast a second way to draw a card per creature cast. To really have a good Storm matchup, you’ll have to combine a variety of disruption and attack them from as many angles as possible. Typically it replaces Gamble in GRx Lands builds, though Gamble can do work alongside it as well. A four mana reduction on each Hydra is no joke, and if you can cast more than one robust hydra in a turn, the net discount becomes ridiculous – two hydras means a total mana reduction of 8, three is 12, 16, and onward. Perhaps the most important two-card combination in Legacy is that of Dark Depths and Thespian’s Stage. Leyline of Abundance is likely most at home in Elfball strategies because they run a high density of mana-producing creatures and casually make infinite mana. Doomsday is an archetype that’s been given new life by the printing of Thassa’s Oracle. The instant speed is worth more than it seems in almost any game, allowing you to selectively choose the most beneficial moment to play your cards. It is finicky, however: after a board wipe, Leyline of Abundance will be a dead card on the battlefield. With six creatures on the battlefield, you can tap Gaea’s Cradle to produce six mana, then spend five to activate Wakeroot Elemental’s ability, then tap Gaea’s cradle again. Who doesn’t? There is very distinct combo potential when this card is placed alongside any land that produces more than five green mana. I got to this list with some tinkering, I think it's very strong against Dredge, particularly the newer Hogaak lists, good to moderately ahead of MUD lists and some of the mid-range decks. With these green cards as testimony, Core Set 2020 doesn’t look like any old core set. That means that you can, for example, rotate on their turn to get a trigger and then untap and have more mana available on your turn to use whatever you exiled. Snow runs Abrupt Decay, D&T has Skyclave Apparition, and Green Sun decks have Knight of Autumn/Reclamation Sage. 2) I really don't get why one would nowadays plays Sylvan Scrying over Once Upon A Time. Golgari Depths is an archetype that’s laser-focused on creating Marit Lage and protecting her. Still, while 2-3 might be normal, one could easily imagine builds that lean more heavily into Valakut Exploration and run the full playset; perhaps a RUG build featuring Uro. A 4/4 creature with flash that pumps your pack at four mana is already a good rate. Despite this, Shared Summons is still an exciting addition to green’s repertoire for a few important reasons: first, it is another tutor in green, and tutors are powerful in EDH; second, it tutors for two cards and puts them directly into your hand, ending up being net card advantage; finally, and most importantly, it’s instant-speed! Given all the strengths of the card, the question becomes less ‘should we play it?’ and more ‘how many?’ At the moment it seems like somewhere between 2-3 is the most usual number, alongside 2 Sylvan Library. Hydra tribal already had a decent home in Rosheen Meanderer decks, but Gargos offers an interesting new direction that is probably a better shell for Hydra decks. If there’s anything I missed please do let me know, it would be great to have as comprehensive a guide as possible. As a mono-green commander, Gargos offers a cost reduction effect much better than the tap ability of Rosheen. ... Elvish Reclaimer. From a compelling Hydra tribal commander to an infinite mana combo, the green cards in this set seem pushed in terms of design and playability, especially for a core set. Examples of this archetype include: Death and Taxes; Goblins; Maverick; Fast Combo One of the great strengths of the Storm deck is that it’s very effective at beating permission spells. Here’s my ordering of the most important combo decks to gun for in 2020: Reid Duke burst onto the competitive scene in 2011 by winning the Magic Online Championship at Worlds, and has since grown to become one of the most widely respected players in Magic. Fiery Obsession – Final Notes on Valakut Exploration. Mox Diamond, Elvish Spirit Guide, and Vampire Hexmage speed up the combo. Elves in particular is a predator of creature strategies, and shines against everything other than opposing combo decks and decks with board sweepers. Resolving the namesake spell will leave you with a five-card library featuring Thassa’s Oracle. Crop Rotation, Elvish Reclaimer , and Once Upon a Time help to assemble it reliably. Part V will focus on the traditional combo decks, which do not rely heavily on the graveyard. EDHREC relies on ads to pay server costs and fund new features. Using Natural Affinity with Setessan Tactics will kick-start the Armageddon. Let me know your thoughts in the comments. We already have Sylvan Scrying from the budget build, but Crop Rotation and Elvish Reclaimer are both relatively cheap and can find us exactly what we need to either combo or start making an army of zombies. Crop Rotation continues to be severely underrated in Commander, and a repeatable Crop Rotation on a body with a highly synergistic type line sounds like a powerful card indeed. If you exile a Crop Rotation to VE, you’ll probably want to play it, since it essentially cycles at the same time as it tutors. These decks can be remarkably powerful and resilient. Instead of trying to combine two or three particular cards, the whole deck contributes to the combo. Similar to Gargos, Voracious Hydra has a fight ability tacked onto it, giving you the choice between making your big monster even bigger or removing an threatening creature from the board. Hail Hyrda. What did I miss? Legacy is home to dozens and dozens of combo decks, each with different strategies, speeds, and configurations. If there are some number of 3cmc must-answer permanents you want to have against Delver, this is definitely in the running, though Choke might be stronger all things considered. It is usually pretty slow, however, unless you have some supplemental damage or multiple VE in play simultaneously. Still, even if it isn’t dealing the full 20, VE can be a nice way to nudge people below 20 life so they can be properly bite-sized for Marit Lage. The rest of the deck is nicely rounded out by high-quality cards that you might find in a Golgari Midrange deck. When all is said and done, this very well may be the least played of the Cavaliers. Of course, the first observation is that this would be an incredible addition to Feather, the Redeemed decks, if only it was in that commander’s color identity. With a 5/6 body at five mana, Cavalier of Thorns is a far stretch from a bad investment; consider this with commanders such as Jarad, Ishkanah, and Izoni. Look for sideboard cards that can overlap and be effective against as many of these strategies as possible. Now that we have a respectable Wolf tribal commander, Nightpack Ambusher has a perfect home, and I’m certain that this card deserves a spot in almost every Tolsimir deck there is. The on-death trigger is essentially Noxious Revival that exiles itself upon resolution. This Wolf lord is innocuously potent. Wolfrider’s Saddle only provides a 3/3 body for four mana, but it is an interesting riff on the Living Weapon mechanic. Elvish Reclaimer is really good fit in the deck, because he can get us the utility land we need. This new green Leyline may be in that category. Often, Past in Flames or Ad Nauseam are the engine cards that allow them to reach this critical mass. Valakut Exploration generates value over time. Elvish Reclaimer: Reclaimer has been a sideboard option or a 2-of to help beat Delver and Hogaak, but it works well with VE as well since it can function to get an extra trigger every turn. It can use Glimpse of Nature combined with mana generated off of its creatures to draw its whole library, or it can use Natural Order for Craterhoof Behemoth to kill you much more directly. Note also that if VE is removed, all the cards exiled with it will remain available to play indefinitely – so crack your fetches and rotate in response to their removal! Some players will put Omniscience into play, which can help them win immediately via Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, or draw their entire library with Enter the Infinite. At this point Valakut Exploration has proven itself as a solid inclusion in any red Lands deck, and in fact as a good reason to be playing red in itself. Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window), Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window). I play without them or without maindeck Safekeeper, but with 4x Elvish Reclaimer (veeerrry good, even in the combo version). Even with all of these restrictions, Cavalier of Thorns has a couple of interesting applications. Change ), BouncingYeti – 2nd in the 10/18/20 Legacy Challenge. After all, multiples stack well and can quickly churn through the deck to burn out the opponent. One more strong upgrade is Constant Mists. Along with the new Wolf lord, Core Set 2020 introduces a few more Wolves. About two anti-graveyard cards will be nice tools for the matchup, but oversideboarding can be counterproductive if the Storm player is prepared for it. That means that, all else being equal, you want to play it on turn 4 with another land in hand (turn 2 if you have Exploration). Elvish Reclaimer has broken out as a brand new way to assemble the Dark Depths and Thespian's Stage combo. Part VI: Combo Decks. Turbo Depths has been a top-tier strategy in Legacy for a while now, but this new innovation might take it over the top. Show and Tell players tend to be my most feared combo opponents. The Ambusher’s ability to generate tokens has a significant restriction attached, however: forfeiting your turn for a 2/2 token seems like a bad deal most of the time. Without fetchlands, most other decks can’t trigger it more than once a turn. Storm can win on the first turn of the game, but wins on the second or third turn much more often. If you take a look at the card, it’s not too hard to see why. Finally, Gargos’ other ability is extremely potent and is also a very good theme to build around: mono-green has trouble removing creatures outside of combat, and fight is remarkably effective at buttressing green’s weakest facet. This deck is still a relative newcomer to Legacy, but it’s one that’s worth keeping an eye on. I can’t help but feel that we’re only scratching the surface on where this card can and should appear.
